CALLING ALL Rhode Island Terry Gilliam fans

In “The Wholly Family,” young Jake has a fantastic journey while on vacation in Naples with his family.
Terry Gilliam headlines the opening night of Flickers: The Rhode Island International Film Festival when his short film, “The Wholly Family” goes on screen at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 9, at Veterans Memorial Auditorum. Once of the Monty Python troupe, Gilliam has created bizarre worlds in “Monty Python and the Holy Grail” and “Brazil.” And “The Wholly Family,” at just under 21 minutes long, is as off the wall as some of his earlier feature films.
Set in Naples (the one in Italy, not the one Rhode Islanders retire to in Florida), it follows the nightmare adventures of Jake, a nasty, demanding boy who is on vacation with his parents. Jake has taken a liking to a figurine of a Neapolitan baker on sale from a slightly creepy street vendor. When his parents don’t give in, Jake steals the figurine.
That night, in Jake’s nightmare, the figurine grows to man size. He forces Jake into his belly where there are lots of Neapolitan bakers who force food on Jake. This is followed by a very strange sequence in which the bakers take Jake to a hospital on an island where babies are delivered from huge eggs, including Jake.
The film has an oddball twist involving baby Jake. And there’s an amusing twist at the end, too, that mimics the familiar tableau figurines of the Holy Family — Jesus, Mary and Joseph. I’m not sure what will happen theatrically with “The Wholly Family,” although it might be given Academy Award consideration. For Gilliam fans, it’s one not to be missed.

Music Monday: Dallin Brings me back to black
One of my favorite songs of the night was BLUE DRESS,
However the highlight of the night had to be her tribute to the late, Amy Winehouse.
After the show I even managed to get a quick treat at The Meatball Shop, all and all a good night.

THE TRENTA IS HERE
31 ounces of coffee!! Now don't get me wrong, I like a good cup of coffee. When I say like I mean love, my two cups a day are literally like fuel for me. I am probably very close to addicted and Starbucks is my favorite dealer. I have recently acquired a list of all of their brews and plan to try and rate all of them, I know such interesting facts like how to create French Vanilla flavoring, and have memorized all of the sizes (TALLS are always 12 oz, GRANDE is 16 oz, and VENTI is 20 oz hot and 24 oz cold.) So if I think that 31 oz is ridiculous, something is clearly wrong.
When I saw the cup today I was excited but also nauseous.

Welcome to Seaside, let the dark clouds roll in
First the good news: Thursday went off without a hitch.
Now the Bad news: My mother’s car ended up needing a new alternator when we couldn’t start it up on Tuesday. Whatever shit happens…
Lastly, the catastrophic news: The first night we were there, Lauren’s mother called informing us that our friend Christopher had died in a fire that afternoon. We had actually seen the fire on the news, noting that it was on Chris’s block and had taken (false) comfort in the fact that the dog being carried out was not Chris’s beagle Lucky. He was 37 years old and one of those people that everyone should be lucky enough to know at some point of in their life, but sadly, many are not. He spoke his mind, and didn’t care who it offended, but if he liked you, you were golden. Lauren had known him, probably all of her life. I met him during High school when Lauren brought me along when he was cutting her hair and subsequently, he did my hair exclusively until I had graduated college. He got me through a few hair emergencies, recommended styles that I always loved, and always made me feel better about myself but the thing I loved most about our visits were the hours (oh yes, for a hair cut with Chris, you needed to clear the day) we spent talking; I could’ve listened to him forever.
This is a picture I dug up of him from Myspace
After Lauren’s mother went to the wake, she reported that his nieces had gotten him flowers shaped as THE YELLOW BRICK ROAD from THE WIZARD OF OZ (he was obsessed) and that unfortunately, his beloved Lucky had to be put down due to smoke inhalation. This might sound odd but I found comfort in this because those two loved each other so much I couldn’t Imagine Lucky’s life without his Daddy or Chris’s afterlife without the dog he constantly told everyone who listened, “You have no idea how much I love this dog.”
LUCKY
It just happened that Amy Winehouse died the same day, which led me to the thought of the two of them in the beyond and Chris, in his typical outspoken manner, telling the REHAB singer, “Not for nothing, you said of said ‘yes yes yes’ to rehab.”
